Spalted Maple wood platter finished in Dr. Ray's Genuine Bee Oil.
I have never seen such an intricate and beautiful spalting pattern in any wood. This size platter would be perfect for a bread or pasta serving tray.
Spalted Maple Wood Platter
This spalted maple wood platter was made from some cut-offs from a neighbor's tree with a beautiful spalted pattern.
I am not certain what specific species of maple this tree was. I only remember it throwing "helicopter" seeds in the Autumn.
The platter was turned from a very thin section left-over from making some clocks. This is an end-grain turning. That means that it had some checking and splitting happening, radiating from the center pith. All splits and checks were filled in with epoxy and CA glue and should remain stable for many, many years.
The piece is signed by the artist on the bottom with pyography and finished in Dr. Ray's Genuine Bee Oil, a completely food-safe mixture of beeswax and mineral oil.
